While not all heroes wear capes, no heroes wear swaddling clothes. The weak are rescued by the strong that’s just a given. Yet if we are to believe the angel, the Saviour of the world is the baby sleeping in an animal feeding trough. Maybe this is a rags to riches origin story of a great hero. He was a weak nobody from a backwater town but through training (cut to training montage with upbeat music) and many hardships, he becomes a mighty warrior.
That might work as a movie but it’s not the path of Jesus. He was born into scandal, lived under threat and died in shame. For a large part of his life, our rescuer looked like he needed rescued. Yet he lived a compelling life, died a slave’s death and rose as conqueror of death and sin.
Christmas is a rescue story and it's us that needs rescued. Take a moment and enjoy this beautiful carol that captures the life, death and resurrection of Jesus-the Saviour of the human race.
