Christmas is a love story

Writer's picture: Andrew DawsonAndrew Dawson

The birth of a baby in the Middle East over two thousand years ago is one of our cultures most enduring stories. Our world has been profoundly shaped by the manger story. But we treat it like a puddle to splash in when it’s an ocean to dive into. It is more than dress up fun for children.

The Nativity is…a love story

A young married couple and a baby what’s not to love? Yet when you pull back from the Christmas card image, you see a cosmic love story of epic proportions. While love will give things like washing machines and drills to it’s beloved, these things don’t capture the depths or delights of love. Precious gifts express deep love. The more precious the gift the deeper the love. I don’t mean expensive. A poor man giving a wooden spoon that he has carved is more precious than a rich man giving a diamond necklace chosen by someone else (at least I tell myself that).

“For God so loved the World that he gave his one and only son…”

In the history of gifts has a more precious gift ever been given? The more precious the gift the deeper the love.

Love came down at Christmas

Love all lovely, love divine.

Love was born at Christmas

Star and angel gave the sign.
